A legitimacy-based explanation for user technology acceptance: the case of Generative AI in higher education

User acceptance is key to the success of new technologies. Typically, explanations of acceptance have centred on the attributes of a new technology and the characteristics of individual users: users are likely to accept a new technology if it aligns with their interests, for instance to increase task performance with minimum effort, and younger, innovative users tend to adopt it faster than older users. Such utility-based explanations of technology often overlook the context in which both the technology and its users are embedded. Even when the context is accounted for it is generally reduced to a single dimension. Context however does matter. Consider for instance, the use of generative AI tools. These tools are facing ethical challenges, including hallucinations, systematised bias, intellectual property concerns, information overload and potential misuse. In response, many private and public organisations, and national and international regulatory bodies are seeking to control their development and use, sometimes even imposing temporary bans. Moreover, recent reviews of AI find that regardless of their perceived utility, AI tools encounter varying levels of acceptance across different cultural contexts depending on the importance that different cultures place on human contact. Thus, beyond utility, the wider regulatory and cultural environment in which such generative AI tools are deployed shape their acceptance by users. We propose here an alternative framework to typical technology adoption models to examine user acceptance of new technologies that accounts both for the utility-based and the normative and cultural factors. We report here intermediate results from a study of GenAI tools acceptance amongst students that provides partial empirical support for our framework.

Equality in diversity? Immigrants and discrimination in the EU labour market economy

This research adopts a novel and multidisciplinary perspective on the complex interaction between migration and discrimination in the sphere of the European labor market. The essential aim of the study is to elucidate the mechanisms through which discrimination influences the conditions of immigrants in diverse regional contexts within the European Union, shedding light on both global trends and local particularities. By applying an integrative methodology that combines advanced statistical analysis with spatial mapping techniques, this analysis seeks to map the geographical distribution of the immigrant population in the EU, exploring the interaction between this population and labor market dynamics. The introduction of a diachronic dimension constitutes a novelty, facilitating a deep understanding of the long-term evolution of integration and discrimination processes, as well as the impact of European policy and macroeconomic changes on immigrants. By examining the relationships between migration, discrimination, geography, and spatial economics, the study intends to reveal the complex structures of inclusion and exclusion, identifying critical areas for strategic interventions aimed at promoting equality and diversity. Ultimately, this work aims to make a significant contribution to the body of academic literature, providing new perspectives and knowledge regarding the synergy between migration, economics, and spatiality, with direct implications for policy-making and the encouragement of a fairer and more inclusive society within the European Union.
