UBB FSEGA organizes, on April 17, 2024, the workshop titled Civil economy and the ethics of economic life, delivered by professor Benedetto Gui, from Sophia University Institute (Florence, Italy).
Short description: A recent line of research and teaching is resuming the humanistic vision of economic actors and of society that characterized the 18th century strand of literature known as “Civil Economy”. Making room within the economic discourse for entities such as non-instrumental motivations, reciprocity, relational goods and genuine trust, in addition to environmental goods, permits to throw new light on some neglected albeit important phenomena, including unhappiness in spite of GDP growth, volunteering, the failures of monetary incentives, and the scant resolve in countering the plundering of nature. A revised understanding of economic reality carries implications for the ethics of economic life as well.
Benedetto Gui (Padova, Italy, 1951), formerly Professor of Economics at Sophia University Institute (Loppiano, Florence, Italy), and at the Universities of Padova and Bari, and Associate Professor at the Universities of Venice and Trieste. His research interests include co-operative and nonprofit enterprises, employment subsidies and the economics of interpersonal relationships. He is the author of books, chapters of contributed books and of articles published in scientific journals including the Journal of Labor Economics and the Journal of Comparative economics. In English he has coedited with Robert Sugden the volume Economics and social interaction: Accounting for interpersonal relations (Cambridge University Press, 2005), and with Luca Stanca a special issue of the International Review of Economics on Happiness and Relational Goods (2010). He has long served in the Editorial Board of Annals of Public and Co-operative Economics and in the International Commission of the Economy of Communion initiative.
