Tematica prelegerii:
In this lecture we will develop a measure that quantifies the consequence to an individual of engaging in social comparisons. We will then illustrate how application of the measure gives rise to novel ways of conceptualizing a variety of economic behaviors and phenomena, such as rational migration when the wage differential between designation and origin is negative; the possibility that different social planners will see eye-to-eye; a socially optimal distribution of migrants among several host countries; a social-psychological explanation of the variation in risk-taking behavior; and restrained assimilation.
