Titlul prezentării: Multicriteria Decision Making: Theory, Methodology and Applications
Abstract: Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods supply a well-structured analytical approach to the management of decision problems in complex frameworks. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) (Saaty, 1988). and its extensions have been widely investigated both from theoretical and applicative point of view. Suitable mathematical structures have been introduced and their properties analyzed to obtain a unifying approach for several methods (Cavallo; D’Apuzzo, 2015; Cavallo, D’Apuzzo, Squillante, 2011) to explain characteristics as the coherence or its lack into the formulation of judgments of the decision makers and of the procedures (Cavallo et al., 2019). Further contributes have been given to face with problems related to the management of data (Cavallo, Fattorusso, Ishizaka, 2025). The methods have been applied and tested to socio-economic contexts, like problems in the domains of production, services and of public administration. In order to face with problems of sorting, some extensions of AHP have been proposed; methods that could keep the efficiency and flexibility of AHP and, furthermore, could be suitable to solve other classes of problems. Then the introduction of AHPSort (Ishizaka et al., 2012) and of AHPSort II (Miccoli F. and Ishizaka, 2017). In some cases, the number of alternatives represents a drawback for the usual methodologies; then a method as Parsimonious AHP (P-AHP) (Abastante et al., 2018; 2019) has been proposed to overcome this kind of difficulties and the possibility of reverse rankings. The AHP is a method that allows complex problems to be analyzed by reducing them to simpler ones. This results in a better analysis of a problem’s intrinsic characteristics and a more effective evaluation of alternatives based on a variety of criteria. However, as the problem’s complexity increases and the number of criteria and alternatives grows, using AHP can become burdensome and inefficient. To address this critical issue, generalizations and extensions of AHP have been introduced in the literature. The goal of these new methodological approaches is to manage increasing complexity through more sophisticated models and algorithms. These extensions improve AHP’s ability to handle large-scale decision problems and broaden its applicability to real-world contexts. These improvements allow decision-making processes to maintain effectiveness even when faced with a large number of alternatives and criteria, ensuring more accurate, consistent, and justifiable decisions. Related to the previous theoretical, methodological and applicative topics, an international research project, supported by Minister of University and Research has been carried out, starting by 2018, by our research group, in cooperation with research groups at University of Portsmouth (UK) and NEOMA BS at Rouen (FR) and the Management staff of the plant of a great company in the domain of automotive production; the related results ( Fattoruso et al., 2023) has supplied a prototype of procedure for the enterprise partner and has been appreciated by the Quality Control System in its periodical evaluation of the plant; furthermore the results have been awarded in several contexts ( Premio Internazionale Guido Dorso at the Senatus of the Republique of Italy, awards the University of Portsmouth, at Dyses Conference at Rouen); NTT award at International Summer Conference 2025. Another related application is object of research in cooperation of a group of municipalities and the main goal is to provide the Public Administration of a suitable tool as support for decision making for socio-economic development, in particular for the tourism.
