Abstract:
This review develops an integrative sustainable HRM framework that aims to bring coherence to a complex but fragmented field. The proposed integrative sustainable HRM framework reflects three key aspects: (1) integration of the acknowledged types of sustainable HRM, (2) integration of multiple levels, and (3) integration of the elements of the nomological network. First, the review brings together the four established types of sustainable HRM (green HRM, socially responsible HRM, triple bottom-line HRM, and common good HRM), as reflections of the same overarching construct. Second, it synthesizes evidence across levels of analysis, providing an overarching view of the individual, organizational, and macro level variables investigated in empirical research. Third, it aims to connect these types and levels by mapping the elements of the nomological network (antecedents, mediators, moderators, and outcomes), resulting in an integrative multilevel nomological network of sustainable HRM. A systematic literature review was conducted, encompassing 368 papers retrieved from the Web of Science database. The analysis revealed that sustainable HRM implementation is shaped by multilevel antecedents, which further impact the outcomes at the macro, organizational, and individual levels. The findings show an environmental dominance across levels, emphasizing a conceptual imbalance in existing literature. The paper contributes to the literature by developing an integrative nomological network framework of sustainable HRM, highlighting its multilevel key antecedents and outcomes.
